John Wong holds a PhD in statistical bioinformatics from Hong Kong, where his early research covered rare diseases including certain forms of epilepsy, alongside bioinformatics work on liver cancer that shaped his interest in cancer biology. He went on to spend six and a half years as a postdoctoral researcher at DKFZ in Germany, working with cancer genomics datasets, before joining PAICON, where he now works on the data harmonization and agentic AI systems behind PaiX Navigator.
The problem that followed him from Hong Kong to Germany
John’s research career kept running into the same wall in different forms. In Hong Kong, cancer research meant working with a small, resource limited population, restricted to local hospital data, which pushed him toward niche, narrowly scoped studies. Moving to DKFZ in Germany gave him access to European scale data for the first time, but the data itself became the real obstacle: reports that took a postdoc months to manually sort and classify by hand before any actual research could even begin.
